Use ods spreadsheet on iPad - convert?

Hello peoples
Having searched for this question, I can't find any answer to my dilemma:
How do I convert an .ods file to something I can use on my ipad air2 ?
This is so that I don't have to cart my laptop everywhere, and still have access to my ods spreadsheet
- it has everything I need on a daily basis.
Saving the ods as xls just results in 'you do not have ms office, you cannot open this file' - or words to that effect.
I do not have ms office or anything like it.
I have seen something like 'convert ods files by sending to microsoft, and getting an OOXML file in return'
- I have no idea how to do this, or what it is.
Can anyone help please? In words a semi-technophobe can understand?

Presumably you have installed OpenOffice on your laptop. If not, you can do that. OpenOffice and Microsnot Office provide many similar features.

If "use" means "view", open the file with OpenOffice, then use File → Export to PDF. Transfer the PDF to your iPad.
If "use" means "edit", see OpenOffice for tablets.
