Your OpenOffice.org recognised your table file as a text file and tried to open in Writer.
First thing make a copy from damaged file, and try to repair the copy.
If you see into a *.ods file with some zipper (OOo files are packages with zip), you could see a structure:
Directories:
Configurations2
META-INF
Thumbnails

Files:
content.xml
meta.xml
mimetype
settings.xml
styles.xml

The content.xml consist your data.

Easiest way to see it rename file extension from .ods to zip, you could open in any zipper.

Copy out, content.xml from damaged file.
Create new empty file.
Replace copied out content.xml into new file, name back .ods.
I hope it will help.
