I thought I already posted a reply to another thread on this subject, but I'm new on here and can't find it so here's a new thread in case anyone finds it of use/help:

I only recently, in the past few days, started having the "Open Office Calc freezes every time I try to copy/paste" problem, on a finances tracking spreadsheet I"ve used for many years, updating several times a month. After reading every "solved" post I could find on this topic and not finding any resolution that I could make work, I tried "saving" the file as a Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls) file instead of an ODF Spreadsheet file, and, furiously knocking on wood here hoping this doesn't somehow cause some other type of worse catastrophe, it's working fine. I have copied and pasted a number of times, saved the file numerous times, and it seems to be totally usable once again like it was before. I also just did a "save as ODF" experiment with the file, opened it up in OpenOffice again, and it seems to be working fine now also. Anyway, FYI for what it might be worth.

The solution which has corrected the problem for many OpenOffice users is: Windows key → Settings → System → Clipboard → Suggested Actions → Off

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit ☐ button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.

Despite the fact that you are reporting an issue with Calc the following thread might be useful reading for the issue because the issue might lie with Windows 11 and how OpenOffice interacts with the Windows 11 clipboard. [Solved] Writer locks up when using Copy/Paste

Thanks, I will keep that handy if (more likely when . .) the problem reoccurs.

This problem occurs in LibreOffice as well.

There have been of late multiple posts to the forum of people having this difficulty with OpenOffice on Windows 11 (and sometimes Windows 10). Often I advise to switch to LibreOffice. Posters try that and report that it is a solution that works for them. On that basis the advice is worth a try. I have yet to read a post where doing so is reported back as not working at all.

The thread that I pointed the OP to above, does contain a possible fix if the OP wishes to continue using OpenOffice — that 'fix', which is to make a modification to the settings for Windows 11 clipboard, was said to seemingly work for OpenOffice. However switching to LibreOffice was also reported as working (without applying the clipboard tweak) and was the preferred solution for that OP. From that, and other posts on the subject, I assume that LibreOffice is interacting with the Windows 11 clipboard in a way that is different from whatever OpenOffice is doing and that difference is advantageous for users on Windows 11 systems that run into clipboard problems.

P.S. I just did a search for this copy/paste problem on LibreOffice running in Windows and the only posts I could find on the issue were from several years ago.

Okay robleyd, I've read the few reports on this for the year 2024 at ask.LibreOffice.org. Seems problem does occasionally happen with LibreOffice and turning off Suggested Actions might be the cure, even for LibreOffice. Thanks for the information and correction.

It is possible that if the turn off of selected actions did not work for the OP, he made some error. I suggest he tries it once again.

OpenOffice has always been sensitive to [read; definitely doesn't like] clipboard utilities. I cannot speak for LibreOffice.

So I had the freezing happen again when I opened the file in Open Office, and so tried 2 of the suggested solutions, both of which appears to have corrected the issue. First was doing select all and then copy/paste to a new blank spreadsheet. Second was turning off Suggested Actions in Settings, Clipboard.
