Update: Nevermind. Opened file as a copy in LibreOffice, save with the same file name and open in OpenOffice.
The Save As solution didn't even help. It was: Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Folder Options > View tab > Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders > Ok.

I don't see what did the trick exactly.
What is the link with displaying the hidden files and folders???
How were you opening the files? If from an email attachment for example, any application will open it read-only (because in the application temporary folder), until you save it in a proper folder.
