OpenOffice not starting on Linux Mint Cinnamon

Post by White Phoenix »

I am running OpenOffice 4.1.15 64 bit on Linux Mint with Cinnamon. The 32 bit version ran fine when I first installed Linux. Then a couple of days later, before I activated Timeshift, it just wouldn’t start.
I uninstalled all Java, and AOO. I ran sudo apt-get purge libreoffice. I ran a cleanup-routine script.
#!/bin/bash
#To run: sudo sh ./apt-get-commands.sh
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove -y --purge
sudo apt-get purge -y
sudo apt-get check
I reinstalled the correct Java package, openjdk-11-jre. Then I re-installed AOO 4.1.15 for 64 bit Linux. Then I tried to open Apache OpenOffice. I had the shell script make a log of all that happened. I don’t know what else to do other than run Windows AOO in a virtual machine or under Wine.
UPDATE: Even in a virtual machine Apache OpenOffice 4.1.15 for Windows cannot find Java. That is, it does not recognize Java. So I really need to find out why AOO for Linux is not able to start. See the report below.

What is the output if you run

Code: Select all

lsb_release -a
in the console?
What did you download from www.openoffice.org to do the installation. That is, what is the name of the file?
Did you in fact download from www.openoffice.org?

You do not need Java to install and run OpenOffice, so don't worry about that for the moment.

@FJCC Yes, I know AOO doesn’t need Java, but it won’t install with LibreOffice and LO has its own Java. So just to make sure I removed all Java. Where you you think I downloaded it from? I always download from the official download site. The file is Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.15_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz. Yeah, I forgot to state the exact version of Linux I was using. I am also using Cinnamon 5.6.8. You want the full system info?

@RoryOF Read my post beginning with “** (soffice:3206): WARNING **: 14:58:33.421: Unknown type: GailWindow Application Error” That is exactly what I did. I had a log file made as I attempted to start AOO. I thought I explained that clearly in the preamble of my post. I guess I failed.

There is no need to get snarky about being asked basic questions. When answering questions on a forum, it's important not to make assumptions about what has been done.
When you purged LibreOffice, did you run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*
including the * at the end? Your post shows you ran

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice

@FJCC Yes, I found that not adding the asterisk was a mistake, so I did it over with the asterisk.

Even though I cleaned out LibreOffice, I think there must be some other program interfering. Initially I removed/uninstalled LO after I installed AOO and then AOO ran normally. I used it to create another file. Later, after installing other programs I went to start AOO to add to the file. That was when AOO would show the splash screen then when the bar was half-filled, it quit. Unfortunately, I had initiated Timeshift too late and not enough check points to do any good.

If OpenOffice is partially starting then crashing, I would try resetting the user profile. I believe it is /home/<user name>/.openoffice/4/user. Rename the user folder to user_old and then try starting OpenOffice.

That was the first thing I did. It failed to change anything. I even completely uninstalled OpenOffice and re-installed it. Same results. I completely uninstalled it and installed 4.1.14 with the same results.
Since I had been installing other programs including some using VirtualBox and some under Wine using PlayOnLinux, this is what makes me think one or a combination of those programs are interfering with OpenOffice the way LibreOffice would. I was hoping something in the log would give a clue.

I suppose I could give a list of the programs that are currently installed.

For that matter, because I have re-installed a couple of times, I have almost perfected my first install procedure which includes a procedure to uninstall certain unwanted programs (like LibreOffice) first, then cleanup. I can send you my scripts, if you’d think you could spot a problem. Because of this routine, it only takes a few hours to do a clean install of the OS and the programs.

The GailWindow... error used show up when OpenOffice was started from a terminal in early Xubuntu 22.04 versions, but has now vanished, whether due to revision of Xubuntu 22.04 or other installations. It didn't cause any obvious problem with OpenOffice, so I think can be disregarded.

For me, OpenOffice 4.1,15 runs without problems on a 64 bit Xubuntu 22.04.4, using XFCE as desktop and Kernel 5.15.0-116=generic_x86_64

I did consider the possibility that the problem might be this particular version of Mint, and that maybe upgrading to 22 might work. But then, I did have OpenOffice working on this version initially. On the other hand, if the problem was caused by another program, maybe that program will have been fixed in Mint 22.

I’ve run OpenOffice on dual-boot Windows/Linux Mint before with no problems. When I first installed OpenOffice on my current system I didn’t have any problems. Then I installed some other programs and went to make a spreadsheet checklist of what had been installed and what wasn’t needed. That’s when I found out OpenOffice wasn’t working any more. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing. Re-installing Linux to repair corrupt/missing packages. I tried installing the 4.1.15 64 bit version (I didn’t know Linux had a 64 bit version till then). I tried 64 bit 4.1.14. All with the same results. The only thing I haven’t tried is completely wiping the internal drive, and starting over again with a totally clean install.

Since I’ve improved my install program, It should run smoother and take less time than before. I have the internal drive backed up (copied) on my backup drive. So I really won’t be taking too much time to re-install and I won’t loose any data. Plus now the shell script makes a log of it’s install progress, including errors it encounters. I still have the logs from the last three installs.

I didn’t have that the first time I installed though. I came up with the idea only after AOO stopped working. Another error I made was not installing and setting up Timeshift separately before running the install routine for the first time.

I know from error messages and warnings from Synaptic’s dependencies lists that installing different libraries and drivers can break other packages. Is there is some way of finding out if there is a conflict?

I tried an "out of the box" install of Linux Cinnamon 21.3 64 bit linux on a spare drive this morning, purged libreoffice, then installed OpenOffice 4.1.15. This opened and allowed me create and Save two test files, an .odt and an .ods.

Running openoffice4 in a terminal for monitoring purposes the files could reopen correctly, but after modification and Saving a core dump was reported. but not listed in detail in the terminal. Nevertheless, the Saved files were complete and reopened correctly. No GailWindow... error was shown.

I had no time to investigate further.

Exactly, AOO was fine until I had installed several other programs. None of them was LibreOffice, but I figure if LibreOffice could conflict with OpenOffice, so could some other program.

My suggestion would be to reinstall OpenOffice, using the steps set out in this posting
viewtopic.php?p=545716#p545716

Then try to run OpenOffice.

Don't remove anything, just do the above install to see if it works.

I work a long time with ApacheOffice 4.2.0 on openSUSE. I do use nearly only packages from openSUSE. There was a moment I did get problems with ApacheOffice. When I did change the java runtime to "java-11-openj9" the problems were gone. It seems that is a package from Eclipse and adoptium. I do get that package from openSUSE.

I have remove all other java-runtimes but I have the idea it is not a must.

Well, I had read another post where there seemed to be a problem with OpenOffice accessing the wrong Java. When all other Javas were removed, AOO finally selected the correct one. But I decided to go all the way with Linux, because AOO for Windows wasn’t finding Java at all. When I switched to Linux I installed AOO, then when I went to select the Java AOO had already found it and was using it. So I am pretty sure it isn’t a Java problem either. But there wasn’t any reason to have three Java installations, and the LibreOffice Java just had to go because of LO conflicting with AOO. I only have one Java installed now and all the programs seem to be fine with that.

I have maybe the same Java-version as Rory but the text is not the same. For me the word Eclips is important and by Rory the word Temurin is important.

Well, I made sure the AOO I had installed was uninstalled and I purged it using “openoffice*”. Then I re-installed according to the instructions. It still showed the splash screen then died.
I think I’ll just wipe the drive and start over for a clean install of Linux and the rest of my programs starting with Timeshift. I’ll also will have a log made during the whole install process. With Timeshift running, if I have a problem I know I will have a good time point to start over from.

I won’t be starting from scratch, since I’ve removed all of the old stuff out and know what will be installed and what won’t be. Plus I’ll keep better track of what I am installing so if it happens again, I can catch the offending program.

Well, I think I’ve found out why OpenOffice isn’t working. Apparently there are a lot of things not working on my system. I have several packages that were not completely installed because of unmet dependencies. There were three files being held that couldn’t be upgraded. I was able to uninstall two without loosing anything significant. But the last one will take out half my system!
So basically I have no choice but to re-install and probably won’t be installing anything that will require Wine or a virtual machine. Which doesn’t seem to make sense, but until I can find a way to make these things work, I’ll just have to do without. Quite a few of these applications, Linux does not have very good substitutes for them. If I cannot run them under Wine, or on a virtual machine because their dependencies cannot be installed. That kind of defeats the purpose of Wine or VirtualBox.

I am having two issues and one seems to be connected with the other since both occurred at the same time after a clean install of Linux Mint Vera with Cinnamon.
The first issue is that after installing OpenOffice it crashes as soon as it starts to run.
The second issue is when I look at sensible-utils in the Software Manager, the button shows “Try Again” instead of “Remove”, indicating that it hasn’t completely installed. (It was pre-installed.)
I checked the list of complaints. All dependencies and mintcommon are installed. Synaptics shows that sensible-utils and all of its dependencies are installed and have no problems.
From its description I don’t see where it is really needed and it supposedly only affects the browser (Midori), terminal and pager (which I have no use for). However when I marked it for removal, I wound up with a list of programs that would be uninstalled and just about everything is listed. Lots more than just the browser, terminal and pager. Some very important core systems files, which would be essentially uninstalling Linux Mint.
When I opted for reinstall, it reinstalled, but it still complains in the software manager. Since many of the items it complains about are python files, and OpenOffice uses python extensively, I believe this bug is what is making OpenOffice crash.

! sensible-utils - pre-installed, but had unmet dependencies that broke it? This happened last installation. See log. This is completely installed, yet instead of the remove button, it shows a try again button. When I click it the following message appears:

sensible-utils: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mintsources was and still is installed with all the dependencies listed below
mintsources: Depends: python3-gi-cairo but it is not going to be installed
Depends: mint-common (>= 2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-gtk-3.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-pango-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-vte-2.91 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-xapp-1.0 but it is not going to be installed

Uninstalling it affects the following programs which looks like just about everything that is installed including core system files.

I just checked the Reviews I reported this years ago.
Removing this removes a lot of useful applications and a lot more applications that are not installed. Looks redundant and unnecessary bloat. This is so wrong. White Phoenix, 2014.09.01

Synaptics list of programs it removes: See partial list in the five attached images.
I re-installed OpenOffice in order to get a crash report and stack trace.

I tried reporting the bug at Launchpad which is where I was sent. Apparently I’ve been there before. For some reason it keeps referring me to “my project” as if I’m a developer working on something instead of an end user reporting a bug that needs to be fixed by a professional. In other words I have no business in Launchpad. So I am reporting the bug(s) here and on the Linux Mint forums. Sorry if this is the wrong place in this forum. I will move the message to wherever I’m told it should go.

I took screenshots of the list of programs that would have been uninstalled by removing sensible-utils, but just one is too big to attach here. Sorry.

@White Phoenix: Thank you for posting your findings, that may help other people with the same issue. You should probably post this at a Linux Mint forum, because this kind of malfunctioning of Linux is not an AOO problem.

I do have the idea it is a problem of Linux. I have the same problem with my update to openSUSE 15.6 and I did read on the ask.Libreoffice forum there was a problem with LibreOffice on FreeBSD
https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/libreoffi ... und/109014

in that link is also a link to
https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/libr ... und.94456/

There they have maybe a solution but I have not test it on this moment of it is working for me.

I left a message at the Linux Mint forums and just got the reply where to report the problem. So that will be my next stop. The place to go for Linux Mint is: https://projects.linuxmint.com/reporting-an-issue.html

UPDATE
I have determined that either Mint’s Software Manager is unreliable or Synaptic is. Software Manager throws error messages on many packages about unmet dependencies. Synaptic reports everything is fine, no broken packages. Yet OpenOffice still does not launch. I upgraded from Linux Mint 21.1 to 21.3 and the problem persists. OpenOffice doesn’t use python3-uno? Currently it isn’t installed, but it occurred to me that when you do a remove/purge using libreoffice* Linux will not remove/purge python3-uno. Just thought I’d mention that. Also Mint made a lot of changes between 18 and 19. Right after their forums were hacked. It may be that those changes adversely affect AOO.
I have been looking at a new Pop!_OS Linux. I’m seriously considering switching. Especially since I need a new keyboard and Pop_OS sells plain keyboards even 10-keyless ones.

While I’m at it I have a question that keeps popping into my head lately. Why does the Linux community seem to hate OpenOffice so much?

I suggest making a live USB of Mint, with persistence, purging the installed LibreOffice; and installing OpenOffice on the live USB. Do the installation "out of the box", i.e., with nothing fancy by way of installation methods, and see does OpenOffice work on that setup.

I run OpenOffice on Xubuntu 22.04.4 with no problems.

When I finally got Mint 21.1 re-installed, the only thing I did was install gParted and gPart. Then I finally was able to uninstall sensible-utils which didn’t take out the whole system. I then removed LibreOffice and installed OpenOffice and AOO still couldn’t finish launching.
Then I reverted back to before removing LibreOffice so Mint was almost at default. Then upgraded to 21.3. Sensible-utils was re-installed as expected. AOO still couldn’t complete launching.
Okay, I can try putting Mint 21 on a USB stick and see what happens. I know AOO worked on 18.1, but a lot of the programs like Firefox are old and will not work. Not sure if they could be upgraded in Mint 18, but maybe I could experiment on a USB stick and see if I could upgrade from 18 with AOO installed. If that worked it should work on my regular system, right? Since I don’t have Windows, what do i use instead of Yumi? Did a search and all assumptions were that it would be from Windows.

Sounds like I should consider Xubuntu, as well. :)
Funny thing is people on Mint forums keep saying Linux isn’t Windows, despite Mint being designed to be like Windows. Right now Mint is a lot like Windows because things aren’t working as they should. Which is why I left Windows in the first place.

Mint looks like Windows, but the underlying engine (linux) is completely different.

My suggestion of Mint on a persistent USB stick and an install there of OpenOffice is intended to prove, on a clean Mint system, whether OpenOffice will run on that system or not.

How do I do that from Linux? All a search turns up is how to do it from Windows. And I can’t seem to find anything in the Software Manager on Mint. What do you use? Will I need to find a tool that will need to be downloaded?
