[Solved] Your personal settings are locked «Q17»

Post by known »

Someone marked this as solved but it is not. Here is the original post: I have a MAC Pro and using open office. My version is 4.1.10. The program tells me i have not downloaded the latest version but when I use the link, it freezes (the color wheel goes round and round) and I have to force close. When it opens sometimes the color wheel is still turning and I cannot access the recovered documents nor open new ones.
I was told to use a link to download which I did
It was also suggested that I disable automatic downloads which I did.
Edit: 2024-06-01: Link to earlier topic -- MrProgrammer, forum moderator

Now it tells me:
Either another instance of Open Office is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing you should make sure user ( ) closes open office on host MacBook Pro local.
Do you really want to continue? and I can click on yes or no.
I have "quit" but that does not help. I have no idea if there is another instance of Open office or how to find it or how to get rid of it

Read: Q17/A17: Another instance of OpenOffice is accessing your personal settings …
Then, only if A17 didn't help: Q27/A27: What are the detailed instructions to delete a profile lock file?

OpenOffice cannot, and never could, install the updates. Currently the check for updates fails for some people. You have to, and have always had to, install them yourself. If you've disabled the automatic update check and don't use the Check Now button in the OpenOffice's Preferences dialog, you won't have the freeze problem you experienced. Thus that problem is/was solved by following the procedures below.
Q22/A22: How do I tell what version of OpenOffice I have?
If http://www.openoffice.org/download/ says a more recent version is available then install it, which will overwrite the old one.
Q03/A03: How do I install OpenOffice on a Mac?

OpenOffice updates are few, far between, and have mostly minor changes. There is little risk in waiting a year, or even three, between checks for a new version. The most recent version is almost identical to the OpenOffice 4.1.10 which your forum signature says that you run. I've been running 4.1.7 since 2019 and have no plans to upgrade unless I run into a specific problem I am experiencing which a new version would fix.

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.
