[Solved] Files locked after transfer to new computer

Post by edgxm1 »

I have about 2000 .odt files on windows 10 open office 4.1.14 to move to a new windows 11 computer.
when i did this with a portable drive all my .odt files on the new computer were locked by the owner name on the old computer
on the old computer,
there are no locked files on either computer.
I had to use different owner name on the new computer because windows 11 would not let me use the same email as on the old computer
how can i transfer large numbers of files to a new computer? t is infeasible to do something with each of the files

2 possibilities:

The "official" way to take ownership and change rights - must be done with an admin account. Should be the same on Win11, but some pictures will be different:

The other way "cheats" by loosing the information...
I guess you used a harddisk to transfer your files, wich may be formatted with NTFS. This retains all information on user etc... Maybe you noted you are sometimes asked, if you wish to copy something on a thumb-drive, as system-information will be lost. So you should be able to use a smaller thumb-drive with FAT to loose the informationon owner etc. Or you could format a harddisk to use FAT...

Edit: You originally posted in a Document in use, locked for editing by Unknown User topic from stu par in 2022. There, the problem was diagnosed as due to anti-virus software. That is not your problem. I moved your topic to this one where the cause was files which were transferred from another computer.

My Windows 7 pc crashed and some O.O. Calc files were open on an external drive at the time. When I try to open the files with the drive attached to a different Windows 7 PC they are "locked" and "in use" by another user (me on the dead PC). Windows file managers shows the files as NOT locked and there are no "-lock" files on the external drive the way there usually would be and which I would normally delete to solve this problem.

Edit: Please review our forum policy: One issue, one thread. You should not put unrelated questions in one topic. Questions are not related simply because they come from you. A question about links is not relevant to a topic about files being locked. If you search for the forum I'm sure you can find topics about Update all links YES or NO. Those may solve your problem. If you cannot find a solution, please open your own new topic if you want help with links. Responses in this topic to your link updating question will be removed.

Also I have to answer several times "Update all links YES or NO" even though in Tools/options/Calc/General I've got "update links on opening" set to always. On the dead machine it did it without asking at all. I am running O.O. 4.1.15 PLEASE HELP
