[Solved] Outline numbering not working on a template
[Solved] Outline numbering not working on a template
I've downloaded a template to work from as an OO text document. I have added my positions and indents for the outline numbering but it is not working. It's indenting after the first number ok (1.5 cm) but then it does not align and indent underneath the text but it runs back to the margin. The same for my sub-levels they don't indent at the correct place at all, they do exactly the same as the first level numbering. The sequencing is ok, 1.1, 1.1.2 but the positioning is wrong. I have input on the position tab, numbering followed by tab stop at 1.5 cm, numbering alignment at 0 cm and indent at 1.5. For the 2nd level, they are all increased by 1.5, so 3, 1.5 and 3 and so on. I have tested with a new document with no prior text and the formulas I have work but not on the template. I'm beginning to think the template is the problem but does anyone know how I can fix? I checked the tabs in the few lines before and made sure they were removed.

Re: Outline numbering not working on a template
You have used the toolbar button I guess, which is the worst method in fact.
Either you want headings or a mere list.
For headings, use the Tools > Outline numbering feature, configure the parameters there. See for example: [Solved] No headings appear in Navigator.
For a mere numbered list, use a style, see: Wiki - Working with list styles.
Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the 🖉 button if your issue has been fixed.

Re: Outline numbering not working on a template
Thanks Hagar Delest. I have set up outline numbering on a blank document from tools - outline numbering. When I exit out nothing happens in the document. How do I get the numbers to appear? ( I get a privacy error from your links so I can't look at them).

Have you configured the numbering in that dialog?
You can dismiss the warning, it is an issue with the site configuration. It points to: https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/v ... hp?t=94016

Re: Outline numbering not working on a template
Did you apply one of the paragraph styles set up in Tools > Outline Numbering? Simply exiting out of the dialog will leave the default style applied and no number will appear.

With the Stylist (F11), apply the Heading 1 (or any other level) to your titles. Or put your cursor in the title and hit Ctrl+1 (or 2...).

Re: Outline numbering not working on a template
In case it helps, here are my two screens for /Tools /Outline numbering. They insert Chapter N every time I use Heading 1 Style.

[Solved] Outline numbering not working on a template
Thanks everyone. Hagar Delest, I couldn't get that to work properly for me. What I've done is styles and formatting, click the last button, list styles, right clicked in the list below and clicked new. I created a new outline numbering list from there. I added a name for it (I think in the organise tab). It then appeared in the List styles list and I selected that to my document. This worked perfectly on the original template I posted above.

Then you completely missed the point.
There are some Writer guides and wikis, up to you.

Re: [Solved] Outline numbering not working on a template
To avoid confusion, you should use the term "list numbering" to refer to the numbering of a list. The term "outline numbering" in Writer refers to the numbering of the document outline (headings). "Outline numbering" is not applied using list styles.Kat27888 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 11:07 pm Thanks everyone. Hagar Delest, I couldn't get that to work properly for me.
