"Save As" tries to open my encrypted folders

I have a number of encrypted folders (dmgs) on my mac. There are aliases to them on my desktop.

When I click "save as" inside open office, the finder style pop up always tries open my encrypted folders, asking me to enter the password, even though I have not selected them and do not want them for this task. I have to click "cancel" every time, before I can do anything else.

If I then navigate away from the desktop and back to the desktop, it again tries to open the encrypted folder.

I find this very frustrating - it should not be trying to open encrypted folders I have not selected.

This is definitely an Open Office issue, rather than a mac issue, since no other application shares this activity, while Open Office does it on both my macs, which are on different versions of OSx.

So, how can I have open office ignore closed encrypted folders when I click "save as", just like every other application does?

I'm going to suggest you check the setting for your paths, which will be under something like Tools -> Options -> OpenOffice -> Paths
That is where I see the path settings in Windows. As you are using a Mac, it may be a little different.

For Mac, use keyboard shortcut ⌘, (Command+Comma) or menu OpenOffice → Preferences.
