[Solved] Error message 2203

Post by Katz »

I have full "ownership" of every file in my system, temp files included. I'm getting the infamous 2203 error for both OpenOffice 4.1.3 and LibreOffice, whatever the latest version is, and I can't install either one. I've had to use Wordpad for a month since getting this computer. blecchhh

Where the installer files was downloaded from?

some information about this error:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... ce-program

I downloaded them from this site. This has not been solved in any of those threads.

I tried changing permissions in a tweak I found at How-To-Geek, but that didn't work either.

I'll try the MS one, similar to the How-to-Geek, and get back to you. I could learn to love Wordpad if I could do away with the "ribbon."

This is a brand-new computer, just built. No malware. And this same error has been cited in this forum many times, as you can see in one of the replies.

7 will be my last OS, even when they pull support in 2020.

I just had built a new Win7 PC too. I installed the Libreoffice 4.4.7 and many other opensource, free and commercial softwares without any problem.
Maybe one of your installed softwares lock the "Temp"...

The forum does not have downloads of AOO. There is a link to the download site http://www.openoffice.org/download/ at the bottom of most pages, however. Is that the link you mean?

Relative to the frequency of reports about some other problems, four topics in nine years is very few. All four topics stated that the error message referenced a file in the C:\Windows\Installer folder. One of the topics was marked solved by the OP after commenting that Windows 7 had locked the Temp folder.

Recheck the permissions on the %Temp% folder and the Installer folder (C:\Windows\Installer). SYSTEM should have Full Control Permission on the folder, but there are reports on SevenForums that SYSTEM did not have any permission to access the %Temp% folder when this error occurred.

I meant this site, not this forum.
Gave permission to SYSTEM to open Installer.
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Temp listed only my username, not SYSTEM. I gave my username permission.

LibreOffice 5.0.0 and 5.2.5 still giving me 2203. Open Office 4.1.3 gave me three 2203 errors while installing, only installed partially.

This cases mean: the problem is not in the installer files of the Office Suites. Something other software blocked the Temp directory.

Try to adjust your other Windows settings, or compare your other installed softwares to the softwares of an another PC. Maybe you will determine the root of the problem.

I posted a link to a SevenForums topic that tells how to solve the problem. It says nothing about giving your username permission. It does say that if SYSTEM doesn't have permission, then SYSTEM should be added and given Full Control permission.

@Bill--How do I add SYSTEM to the menu?

@Zizi64--I don't have Win 7 on any other computer; they're all Win XP. The filing systems and permissions are different. The problem is in Win 7.

Temporarily I'm using Wordpad, or maybe I'll go back to Word 2003, which I already own. I use only very basic functions anyway.

The problem is in Win 7.
I am sure, this problem is not a general problem with the Win7, AOO and LO. We had installed more than 15 pieces of the LO4.4.7 (and the previous versions before it) at our company onto Win7 x64 prof, and we never observed such problem. (The LO4.4.7 has 32 bit version only)
And I had installed the AOO 4.1.2, AOO 4.1.3 and the latest versions of the portable LO5.x.x onto Win7 x64 bit without any problem.

Bill--I did figure out how to add SYSTEM, and OO installed this morning. I don't need LO in that case.

I had the same problem yesterday with Inquisit WebPlayer, a Flash-like program used in some of the surveys I do to make a few bucks. Added SYSTEM, etc., no cigar.

Unless you're in the tech field, using computers means you'll always have some unsolved problems, have to make workarounds, and let minor problems go. After 16 years, I knew every quirk of XP like the back of my hand. I've had 7 only a month.

AFAIK, this is an anomaly, not a quirk. It's not normal for SYSTEM to not have full control of %Temp%. If it were normal, then everyone would see the error 2203 when installing any program.
